How to Deal with Separation Anxiety from Your Child
As a parent, you get the honor of being your child’s first best friend. You provide care for your child, teach him or her about the world, and spend more time with your child than with anyone else. This is why it is so difficult for some children to feel safe and comfortable when they are away from their parents. If you are getting ready to enroll your child in childcare or preschool, check out these tips for dealing with separation anxiety:
- Talk to your child. Having a conversation with your child about what to expect from childcare or preschool is a great way to help him or her cope with separation anxiety. Let your child know how fun and exciting it will be to make friends with the new kids he or she will meet, and make sure you child understands that starting his or her education is an important part of becoming a grown-up!
- Practice spending time away from one another. Spending time apart may be as difficult for you as it is for your child. Some parents find it even more difficult to separate than their children do! This is why it is important to practice spending time apart. Ask family and friends if they have some free time to watch your child. Drop your child off or invite your babysitter over while you leave to run errands. This practice will help your child become more comfortable spending time away from you.
- Set a good example. The best way to prepare your child for childcare or preschool is to be a great role model. If you take a long time to say goodbye to your child or appear sad when you are saying your goodbyes, your child will be more likely to feel anxious about spending time away from you. If you give you child a short, sweet, and happy goodbye, however, he or she will be more likely to feel comfortable and competent.
